Will the cracks come back through the new surface?

Hairline surface cracks generally will not. A moving crack, one that runs through the full depth of the slab or sits over a settled section, will telegraph through eventually, because an overlay is a surface treatment and not a structural repair. We route and fill what can be filled, and where there is real movement we say so and recommend a control joint or replacement instead of covering it.

How thick is an overlay?

Usually a few millimetres, which is thin enough that door clearances and thresholds are rarely a problem and thick enough to hide the old surface texture. If your slab needs more than that to get flat, it is a levelling job before it is a resurfacing job, and the estimate will say so.

Is resurfacing cheaper than replacing the driveway?

In almost every case where the concrete underneath is still structurally sound, yes, and by a wide margin, because nobody is breaking out and hauling away the old slab. The catch is the condition test. If the slab has heaved, sunk in sections or crumbled through its depth, resurfacing is money spent on a surface that will fail again. Estimates vary, so we look at it before quoting either way.

What is concrete resurfacing

Concrete resurfacing is bonding a thin new layer of cement-based material over concrete that is already there. The old slab stays in the ground and keeps doing the structural work. The overlay, usually only a few millimetres thick, gives you a fresh, uniform, sealed surface on top of it.

It is a surface treatment, not a structural repair, and that distinction is the whole decision. If your slab has settled unevenly, heaved from a root, or crumbled right through its depth, an overlay will follow the problem instead of fixing it. If the slab is sound but looks tired, spalled, stained or crazed with hairline cracks, resurfacing gives you a new surface without the demolition, the disposal or the three weeks of your driveway being a hole.

Finishes range from a plain broom or trowel texture through to stamped and stencilled overlays that read as flagstone, slate or brick. On the coast the practical consideration is slip resistance, because a smooth sealed patio in November is an ice rink with better drainage.

Fix cracked concrete driveway without replacing

Yes, in most cases, and the sequence matters more than the product. Nothing goes over a crack until the crack has been dealt with.

We route each crack out to a clean, square edge, which removes the loose material at the sides and gives the filler something to grip. Structural filler goes in and gets ground flat. Spalled and pitted areas, usually where salt or freeze cycles have taken the surface off in flakes, get cut back and patched. Oil-stained sections get degreased and mechanically ground, because an overlay will not bond through contamination any more than a coating will.

Then the slab gets profiled, primed and overlaid. The result is a single continuous surface rather than a patchwork, which is the part most people are actually after.

The exception is honest and worth stating: a crack that is still moving will come back through. If we see displacement across a crack, a section sitting lower than its neighbour, or a crack that runs the full depth, we will recommend a control joint, a partial replacement, or leaving it alone, rather than take money for an overlay that fails in two winters.

How long does concrete resurfacing last

A properly prepared overlay on a sound slab typically gives ten to fifteen years on a residential driveway, and longer on a patio or walkway that never sees a vehicle. Interior and covered surfaces last longer again.

Three things move that number. Preparation is the first and largest: an overlay bonded to a clean, profiled slab and an overlay bonded to a dusty one are different products in practice. Drainage is the second, because water that sits on a surface, or under it, will get into any weakness eventually. Victoria patios shaded by mature trees hold moisture for months and grow moss into anything with texture, which is worth planning for rather than discovering.

The third is sealing. Most decorative overlays want a penetrating or film-forming sealer refreshed every few years, and that small piece of maintenance is the difference between a surface that ages and one that degrades. We hand over what yours needs and when, in writing, rather than leaving you to guess.

If the slab is beyond an overlay we will say so. If you have asphalt rather than concrete, that is a different job entirely.

Resurfacing versus replacing, honestly

Replacement means breaking out the existing slab, hauling it away, re-preparing the base, forming, pouring and then waiting for it to cure before anything drives on it. It is the right answer when the base has failed, when drainage needs re-grading, or when the slab is structurally gone.

Resurfacing skips all of that. No demolition, no disposal, and a driveway back in service in days rather than weeks. It is substantially less expensive for the same reason: most of the cost of replacement is removal and disposal, not concrete.

The way to decide is not price, it is condition. We come out, walk the slab, look for movement, check the drainage and tell you which one your surface actually needs. If that answer is replacement, we do not do that work, and we will say so plainly rather than sell you an overlay as a substitute.
